The Real Facts About Facial Moisturizers
By Van Crawford

Facial moisturizers come in about as many varieties as faces themselves. Finding your way through the maze of products on the market can be a daunting task, but it all begins with knowing your own skin.

The skin is the largest, and in many ways the most sensitive, organ. On a daily basis it comes in contact with any number of irritants and each can have a damaging effect. Pollutants and chemicals, found in everything from house and garden care products to clothing and other fibers and even tap water, can take a toll on sensitive skin. Facial cream can be a lifesaver, but it too can cause damage if you don't take the time to choose the right one.

There are three basic types of skin: dry, oily, and combination, and many subtle variations of each. Dry skin can be particularly sensitive to environmental irritants and temperature extremes, resulting in itching, cracking and redness. Oily skin often reacts to fibers and other irritants which come in direct contact with the skin, leading to breakouts which can sometimes be severe. Facial moisturizers can treat all types of skin, with ingredients that can help balance moisture levels and bring relief.

There are a number of key ingredients to look for in a facial cream, including kaolin, plant based oils such as macadamia oil, shea butter and vitamin E. These natural ingredients will be able to combat a range of skin problems and do so without further exposing the skin to harsh chemicals.

Kaolin is particularly effective for oily skin as it absorbs excess oil and removes built up dirt which can lead to breakouts. Macadamia oil and other natural oils are the safest way to treat dry skin, as they gently replenish depleted moisture and protect the skin from signs of aging. Facial moisturizers which contain shea butter offer a natural solution for reducing scars and blemishes.

Vitamin E and other antioxidants have proven to be an exciting addition to the world of facial cream and other skin care products. These natural fighters rid the body of free radicals and other toxins, helping the skin to heal itself from within. This offers a level of protection unlike any other, going beyond the skin to improve overall health.

While various natural ingredients target specific kinds of skin, all types of skin can benefit from facial moisturizers which contain some kind of sun protection. The sun takes more of a toll on the skin than almost any other environmental irritant and limiting that damage is crucial. No matter what product you use, be sure that it has an SPF factor of at least 15 for maximum protection.

Better health begins by loving the skin you're in. Take the time to understand your skin's special needs and find a product that works for you and you'll enjoy the rewards in the long run. Take care of your skin and it will take care of you!
