When looking at the number of night creams flooding the skin care industry, it appears there is a need to prep your skin before going to sleep for the night. Though no research has been done comparing daytime and nighttime facial skin care products, there may be some benefits to caring for your skin before going to bed at night. Since skin cells regenerate faster at night than during the day, your sleep hours are a good time for your body to rejuvenate your skin.
Many popular anti-aging ingredients are active longer when they are not exposed to sunlight.
Antioxidants do not hold up well in sunlight, or from the effects of everyday air pollution. Retinoids, which help to quicken cell replacement, quickly become ineffective and break down with exposure to sunlight. Vitamins C and E when applied topically, do not hold up well in sunlight. These ingredients will perform at a higher level when applied before going to bed.
Another benefit of nighttime skin care, is your skin maintains proper hydration more easily than during the daytime hours. Since nighttime creams don't have to compete with make up, pollution, or even sunlight, they are better at attracting and keeping moisture in the skin. They also prevent moisture from evaporating from your skin overnight. What is encouraging, is that the skin may be more receptive to these active ingredients when you are asleep. This is good news, as researchers believe the skin works harder to rejuvenate itself during your resting hours.
To obtain the maximum benefit from your beauty sleep, there are three things you should consider for your nighttime skin care regimen. Some of these are things you have read and heard before, but they are still very relevant to your skin care desires. Always remember, sometimes the best things are the simplest and easiest things.
First, keep your skin well hydrated. Drinking eight glasses of water a day, while adding omega-3 fatty acids to your diet, keeps you hydrated fro the inside out. Also, consider adding a humidifier in your bedroom. A humidifier will help you avoid overnight moisture loss from your skin while you are sleeping.
Second, use a moisturizer after washing your skin. A moisturizer like Clinique's Moisture Surge Extra will help seal in the moisture your skin has absorbed after bathing. Keeping moisture trapped helps plump up fine lines and wrinkles. It also helps to give your face a soft and smooth appearance.
Finally, try sleeping flat on your back. Sleeping with your face pressed in a pillow will cause fold lines in your face that could become permanent with repetition. Sleeping on your back will also fight the effects gravity has on your skin throughout the course of a day. Research has shown that skin wrinkles more in the afternoon than in the morning. Sleeping on your back is a chance to reverse that.
Getting your rest is definitely important for your skin. Nighttime skin care is just as important as what you do in the morning. It allows your favorite skin care products to perform without interference from the sun or the environment. This is another effective tool in your quest for beautiful skin. So at the end of a long day, reward yourself with a little beauty sleep.
