Dry Skin Tips For Young Children

By Jerrick Foo

If your child has red patches, it could be an early warning sign of eczema. As the humidity in the air reduces, eczema can flare up quite easily.

One of the remedial actions you can take to treat dry skin and eczema in your child is to make sure their skin is well-moisturized. After bathing your child, preferably in lukewarm and not hot water, you can help them to apply the creams. Do this for at least twice a day to help prevent skin condition associated with dryness of skin.

However, do remember that if you bath your child too frequently, their skin will dry out more. There are some parents who use heavily perfumed soaps and liquids which is very bad for your child. The reason is because young children have more delicate and sensitive skin compared to adults. Their skin resistance level is lower.

Hence, it’s good practise to use a soap-free lotion instead. Most soap contains sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS), which is a prime suspect for causing eczema in young children.

If simple changes to living habits does not show any sign of improvement, you may want to turn to dry skin creams like hydrocortisone. Just apply thinly to the affected areas and follow up with the moisturizer. Be careful not to over zealous when it comes the applying on the face as too heavy an application may end up having undesired results like adverse skin reactions.

You should also note the type of food your child is taking for their meals. Prepare foods that are rich in antioxidants which can help to drive away the free radicals in their skin. Vegetables, tunas, whole-grains are good for dry skin.

There are certain foods that may trigger eczema and dry skin in your children. So take a close watch on what are the possible foods and products that may cause dry skin to occur. Make sure you apply sun-cream in the summer to protect your child’s skin as well.
