How do you compare night creams? Do you ask a friend for advice or study the adverts in glossy magazines and on TV to make your choice? It's always good to compare notes with your friends and neighbors to find out which skincare products they use and whether they have had good results. But just because one brand of night cream may suit your friend does not mean that it will be the right one for you. When you compare night creams you really want to adopt a more scientific approach. Don't let the word "scientific" put you off, just follow these simple guidelines:
The number one rule is to check the ingredients. Read the small print on the label to find out what is contained in the tube or jar that you are thinking of buying. There are two things to look out for, those ingredients that are not beneficial and can in some cases actually damage your skin, and secondly ingredients that are helpful in keeping your skin looking smooth and healthy.
Let's first consider those ingredients you should avoid since, as soon as you see one of these listed on the label, you can discard the product without further thought.
# Sunscreen compounds such as avobenzone, benzophenone and dioxybenzone since you do not need to be protected from the sun while you sleep.
# Parabens - you will find different variations such as butyl, ethyl, methyl and propyl paraben. These are often included as a preservative, but can cause allergic reactions and skin rashes.
# Alcohols - benzyl alcohol, ethanol, ethyl alcohol and methanol are just some of the names you will see. Alcohols tend to dry the skin and can cause irritation.
# Mineral oils - look for names such as petrolatum, liquid paraffin and paraffin wax. Used in many products because it is cheaper than the alternatives, it tends to clog the pores of your skin and also can cause irritation.
Now let's turn to those ingredients that are beneficial and do have a positive effect on your skin. These are some of the ones to look for:
# CoQ10 - sometimes shown with its full name of Coenzyme Q10 is a powerful antioxidant which can counter the effects of free radicals in our cells and so helps in maintaining a healthy skin.
# Cynergy TK - you may have read in magazines about collagen and its importance in keeping your skin looking firm and healthy. As we age our bodies tend to produce less collagen and so skin tends to sag and form wrinkles. Cynergy TK promotes the production of collagen to reverse this trend.
# Phytessence Wakame - this is a form of Japanese seaweed which does not sound like the sort of thing that you might want to put on your face, but it contains a powerful ingredient that helps to preserve collagen.
If you follow these guidelines when you want to compare night creams you will be making your choice on a far sounder basis that if you just rely on the advice of a friend.
