During the teen years, skin goes a little crazy because hormones are changing, and the skin manifests it, producing more oil, breaking out, and more. The following is a look at skin care for pimply teens to help reduce the acne, and make life a little easier:
Tip one: Start watching for the warning signs, and catch breakouts early before they have a chance to spread all over the face. In teens these breakouts typically start on the nose.
Tip two: Start treatment as soon as you see the first signs of acne. If you begin treatment sooner you will see better results. It is always easier to prevent a problem then correct one.
Tip three: Your teen should cleanse their face every night with a gentle cleanser. You do not want them to use a harsh cleanser as it can kill the top layer of skin and add to the amount of dead skin clogging pores. Try a cleanser such as Dove or Neutrogena, these are mild and work equally well for boys and girls.
Tip four: If you start getting zits that come to a head, use a stronger cleanser once or twice a day. If the cleanser dries out the face, it can lead to problems, so use an oil-free, fragrance-free moisturizer after every cleansing.
Tip five: Consider using a mild benzoyl peroxide cream (2.5% strength) if you regularly experience red or inflamed breakouts. Benzoyl peroxide kills pimple causing bacteria, and if you use a mild cream it will not be too harsh on the skin.
Tip six: Prevent breakouts by trying no to touch your skin, or your zits. Even if you have a zit begging to be popped, leave it alone. Doing so can force infected material deeper into the pore, which could just make the pimple worse. In addition, if you continue to pick, this can lead to inflammation, infection, and even scarring.
Tip six: If your teen has excessively pimply skin, or you are not seeing results with your cleanser of choice, consider seeing a doctor. Some people do not respond well to over the counter acne treatment; this is when a dermatologist becomes extremely helpful. The doctor will put together a treatment plan based on your child's skin.
Tip seven: Avoid stress, sitting around after a workout, greasy air (such as that in a restaurant kitchen), etc. as all of these can lead to further pimples. The best way to care for your skin is to simply make it so you get as few pimples as possible. The less you have, the less worried you have to be about treatment.
Pimples happen, and there is not a way to avoid them all together, but it is possible to reduce the number you get, and properly treat the ones you have. The keys are consistency, discipline (not touching), and lifestyle changes that lead to healthier, happier skin.
