It is not surprising that one of the largest markets in the world of health and beauty is anti-ageing skin care products; as our lifespan increases so does our desire to remain active as well as look young and healthy. This is done using skin care products that encourage the growth of the protein collagen which happens to be the main source of the protein used in the connective tissue of skin; twenty-five per cent of the skin's protein is collagen. Collagen is a member of another family of substances that aid in reducing the signs of ageing. this group is called antioxidants which are natural chemicals found in many foods and our body.
Probably the best known of these anti-oxidants is vitamin C although no-one really knows just how much we should have each day. Vitamin C formulated skin care treatments suffer with a particular problem of oxidizing on contact with the air which causes a problem for users and manufacturers.
More stable skin care treatments are now available that are almost as efficient and actually cost less to manufacture. Unfortunately the anti-oxidant products used to replace vitamin C are not as effective but as vitamin E and lipoic acid can both have the same effect; this is not too much of a problem.
Vitamin E is a fat-soluble antioxidant and is found in human blood; it helps build resistance against infection like cancer for example. Lipoic acid is found in every single human cell and helps provide energy; it is also able to help reduce and restore the skin's aging process.
Other compounds called phytochemicals have proved to be beneficial in the
formulation of anti-ageing skin care products; they are removed from various plants. A secondary but more important use of phytochemicals is the effect they have on the prevention of some strains of cancer; examples of these are:
*Cancer of the Prostate
*Cancer of the Breast
*Cancer that attacks the Colon
All of which are on the increase globally.
Some B-vitamins like B5, B6 and B12 are also in use for anti-ageing skin care products. This is a vast area that has the potential for many new anti-ageing skin care products and services in the future but research needs to continue. Whilst a great deal has been learned about this subject, it is only the tip of the iceberg; each year, more is learnt about this topic so reducing the effects of age on the body is just a matter of time.
In time it is hoped that less expensive and more reliable anti-ageing skin care products will become available for a larger number of people to use. At the moment though, science is still behind the field of natural anti-aging methods; man-made products may never replace those that are available naturally! Natural methods are known, but few people actually follow them; what proportion of the population actually eats healthily, takes plenty of exercise, drink sufficient water and obtain restful and regular sleep?
