Man Skin Care, hard to believe now but not too long ago you would very rarely see those three words together.
A lot of men would argue that 'manly' skin care is an oxymoron at best and anathema at worst. Skin care products have been solely marketed for women for many years so it is far from surprising that the idea that men should use these products is hard to comprehend for many men, even those who do put some effort into their appearance. So is there really any such thing as manly skin care or are these products marketed towards men no different to products made for women?
The concept of men caring for their skin turns on the question of why men using these products There are two reasons why both men and women use skin care products. The first is to actually look after the skin, and the second is simply to look better, usually younger. For men the first reason should be more important.
Men spend more time outside and their skin suffers more from the elements than women's skin. The result of this time spent outside is sunburn, dry skin, and skin that ages faster than women's skin. Because of this it is arguably more important for men to look after their skin than women. The challenge is to convince men of this.
This can only be done if men see skin care products as manly rather than feminine. The second reason mentioned above will probably result in more sales of products. However, some of these men may not be overly concerned about the 'manliness' of the product they are using in the first place. The desire to appear more attractive is a powerful motivation.
Skin care companies have attempted to present their products in a manly way by using packaging that portrays a more masculine image. In contrast to the packaging of women's skin products, which are traditionally white, and somewhat clinical, men's products often use black or red colours and use words that evoke tribal images.
The idea that packaging makes a skin care product manly is a superficial one. These products must also adequately address the different needs men have when it comes to tending to their skin. The bottom line is that for a lot of men there will be no such thing as skincare until they accept the need to use skin care products for the purposes of looking after their skin first and then reaping the naturally occurring rewards off good looking skin second.
However the men who recognise the need to look after their skin first and foremost reap the benefit of younger, healthier looking skin, because in this case beauty is more than skin deep. These men recognise the long term gains from using quality products and not falling for brand image.
