Tell me, does this describe you? If you remember the night cream that your mother or grandmother used, it was probably thick, white and greasy. Surprisingly, those same creams are still on the market, today. You might be interested in something better.
The skin's natural rejuvenation processes go on while you sleep. So, using a night cream that supports these processes is important. Using a greasy, heavy paste that interferes with those processes is a bad idea.
The typical ingredients in these creams include petrolatum, mineral oil and paraffin wax. They are all very similar ingredients, derived from crude oil. They are not actually moisturizing, but they can clog the pores, cause blemishes and change the skin's natural pH balance. If used on a continuing basis, they increase the need for moisturizer, as they strip the skin's natural oils.
Some respected dermatologists have said that in large amounts, these ingredients interfere with the natural rejuvenation processes, which can lead to a prematurely aged appearance.
So, those are ingredients to avoid. They cause the greasy feeling, because they do not penetrate.
Other ingredients to avoid are added fragrances. Those strong fragrances can interfere with your sleep. When you wake up feeling un-rested, it will show on your face. These creams should also be free of artificial preservatives, because they are common causes of irritation and allergic reaction. There are lots of other ingredients that could cause problems, but let's get to the good stuff.
What should a night cream do? It should increase the skin's moisture content, stimulate the production of new cells, protect the skin from damaging free radicals, help repair damage that has been done during the day, support the immune system and reduce the risk of blemishes. If possible, it should also increase the amount of collagen that is present in the skin, because that reduces the affects of age.
Two of the best moisturizers are avocado oil and Shea butter. Avocado oil has been shown to increase the amount of soluble collagen present in the skin. Shea butter is very close to the skin's own oils, so it is quickly absorbed and leaves no greasy feeling.
Researchers have proven that manuka honey has natural antibacterial activity that can help heal blemishes and support healthy immune system function. It also has antioxidant activity. Antioxidants protect the skin from free radicals and help repair damage that has been done during the day.
Coenzyme Q10, if properly formulated is a good ingredient for night cream, because of its antioxidant activity. Natural vitamin E is another effective antioxidant and also serves as a natural preservative for the other ingredients, prolong their shelf life and insuring that they do not become rancid.
The only ingredient that has been proven to stimulate the production of new skin cells is Functional Keratin. In clinical studies, it was shown to increase skin cell proliferation by as much as 160% over the course of three days.
Bottom line that may seem like a lot of ingredients to look for, but there is a safe and effective night cream on the market that contains them all. Why not look for it?
